The sign of them going bad is that the vac line on them gets filled with gas. (They have vacuum diaphragms and when they fail they allow fuel to seep by) This also causes you to run rich. Let it run *just a little*, rev it a bit, then pull off the vac line. (be ready with a bowl) IMPORTANT!!!! Do NOT get the engine HOT! IF these are leaking, they could potentially spew fuel onto a hot manifold! Of course, with vacuum controlled gadgets in the cabin, it makes it easy for the fuel smell to come in. Check those immediately, get back to us.
